This creates an environment full of people with unsatisfied urges, and they turn to adult media to satisfy these urges. It's too difficult for people to meet members of the opposite sex otherwise. There was a time when marriages would have been arranged, but that time is long gone with nothing to replace it. In modern Japan, there are few places for adult men and women to interact. The workplace is one of the few, and you can't very well meet many eligible partners in the typical workplace, now can you? I think it's this dynamic of lonely people with natural urges that has allowed the adult film industry in Japan to flourish, and it's gotten to the point where the industry seems to be more or less mainstream.
